Jacob was waiting by the front doors, his shoulders drawn in, his backpack hanging low. His teacher stood beside him\u2014a woman in her early thirties, crisp blue blouse, clipboard tucked under her arm. Her smile didn\u2019t quite reach her eyes. Tight. Practiced. Polite.<\/p>\n

That afternoon, while showing a home to a new couple, my phone buzzed. It was the school. The teacher\u2019s voice was clipped.<\/p>\n

\u201cJacob\u2019s involved in a serious incident. You need to come immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n

My blood ran cold.<\/p>\n

Before I could reply, he added, \u201cFunny thing\u2014I\u2019m seeing someone who works here.\u201d<\/p>\n

I blinked. The pieces began to fall into place. But I brushed past him, something dark stirring in my chest.<\/p>\n

Inside, the hallways were quiet. As I reached for the principal\u2019s office door, a voice behind me whispered, \u201cMrs. Bennett.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was the janitor.<\/p>\n

\u201cI probably shouldn\u2019t say this,\u201d he muttered, \u201cbut your son\u2019s not at fault. Ms. Emily set him up.\u201d<\/p>\n

I opened my mouth\u2014but the door creaked open.<\/p>\n
