Trump Appoints Sara Carter As Drug Czar: ‘Will Lead The Charge To Protect’ US

President Donald Trump has announced the appointment of Sara Carter as the new Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP).

In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “As our next Drug Czar, Sara will lead the charge to protect our nation and save our children from the scourge of drugs.”

Carter expressed her gratitude to the president, sharing her excitement about joining the administration on X. “It is truly an honor to serve President Donald J. Trump and be part of an administration committed to putting America first,” she wrote. “America’s greatest resource is our people, and it will be up to each and every one of us to do our part – I promise you I will never stop fighting.”

As a journalist, Carter has contributed to Fox News and has extensively covered border issues, particularly during the more lenient immigration policies under the Biden administration. She has called for stricter border regulations due to the significant drug and human trafficking problems.

Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) congratulated Carter on her new role, stating that she would “fight tirelessly” to keep Americans safe and praised her expertise on border issues. “Congratulations to @SaraCarterDC on becoming Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy! Sara is an expert on the border and the crisis it has created for drug trafficking. This issue has put Tennesseans in harm’s way for far too long, but Sara will fight relentlessly as Drug Czar to keep our loved ones safe,” Blackburn wrote.

Texas Department of Public Safety Spokesperson Lt. Chris Olivarez also congratulated Carter, expressing his appreciation for her support of Texas and emphasizing the positive impact she could have in her new role. “CONGRATULATIONS, @SaraCarterDC!!! I genuinely appreciate your friendship and overwhelming support for Texas over the years. This is an excellent opportunity for you to effect change and help so many families who have lost loved ones due to deadly illicit drugs. This is GREAT for the country,” he wrote.

Since taking office two months ago, Trump has claimed that America is “back” and has highlighted his various accomplishments, some of which have sparked controversy. He has issued a series of executive orders, expanded his executive powers, and significantly reduced the size of the federal workforce during his second term, according to Fox News.

Trump has signed approximately 100 executive orders since his inauguration on January 20, a rate that surpasses that of any recent president in their initial weeks in office. However, despite his optimistic claims about progress, recent polls indicate that many Americans do not share his view.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted over the weekend (March 22–23) found that 46% of respondents approved of Trump’s performance, while 51% disapproved. This poll surveyed just over 1,000 adults nationwide. The survey was largely conducted before the controversy surrounding top White House national security officials discussing sensitive operational details of an upcoming U.S. military strike in Yemen on the messaging app Signal, which may have violated federal law.

In a more recent national poll from March 14–17 by Fox News, 49% of respondents expressed approval of Trump’s job performance, while 51% disapproved, reflecting mixed feelings among Americans.

The latest national polls show that Trump’s approval ratings remain relatively low. Since the beginning of his second term, his average approval ratings have dipped slightly, with approval in the low 50s and disapproval in the mid-40s. Concerns about the economy and the potential inflationary effects of Trump’s tariffs on major trading partners have contributed to this decline, similar to the challenges faced by former President Joe Biden during his presidency.

Despite these challenges, the Fox News poll indicates that 49% of respondents approve of Trump, matching his highest approval rating in Fox News polls, which he last achieved in April 2020, near the end of his first term. This figure is six points higher than his approval rating at the same time in his first term (43% in March 2017).

Veteran Republican pollster Neil Newhouse noted that Trump’s current approval ratings are still higher than at any point during his first presidency. Daron Shaw, a member of the Fox News Decision Team and a politics professor at the University of Texas, highlighted that Trump’s solidified support among Republicans is a significant factor in his current approval ratings, contrasting with the challenges he faced at the beginning of his first term.
