Barry “Butch” Wilmore, a NASA astronaut, recently shared insights into how his faith helped him navigate a challenging nine-month mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS). In an interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network, the 61-year-old devoted Christian spoke candidly about finding serenity and meaning in space, despite facing unforeseen setbacks that extended his stay in orbit.
Wilmore and fellow astronaut Sunita Williams launched on Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft on June 5, 2023. However, NASA’s decision to delay their return—initially scheduled for June 13, 2023—due to technical difficulties turned what was meant to be a brief mission into months of uncertainty. Eventually, the pair splashed down off the coast of Florida much later than anticipated, at 5:57 p.m. ET on a Tuesday.
Throughout this ordeal, Wilmore leaned heavily on his spirituality. He attributed his strength to his faith in Jesus Christ, stating, “It all works out for those that will believe. How that relates to our lives is significant and important, as He is working out His plan and His purposes for His glory throughout all of humanity.”
A dedicated member of Providence Baptist Church in Pasadena, Wilmore was born in Tennessee and currently resides in Texas with his wife, Deanna, and their daughters, Daryn and Logan. His faith remained steadfast before and during the mission, as he and Williams prayed with launchpad technicians just before liftoff, demonstrating their commitment to their beliefs.
Wilmore’s reliance on faith was echoed by his family. After his safe return, Daryn expressed to DailyMail.com, “We know it was His plan, and the Lord has given us all peace throughout all of this.” Deanna added, “Even if we don’t fully understand it, whatever the Lord does will be for our good and for His glory.”

The prolonged mission garnered attention beyond NASA, with former President Donald Trump urging Elon Musk to intervene in January, accusing then-President Joe Biden of “abandoning” the astronauts. In response, NASA adjusted the schedule to ensure Wilmore and Williams’ safe return.
Reflecting on his experience after returning to Earth, Wilmore shared a profound lesson: “However [God’s plan] plays out, I am content because I understand that. He is working on everything.” He emphasized that both joyful and challenging times serve a divine purpose for believers, citing Hebrews 11 as a source of inspiration.
Wilmore’s journey underscores the power of faith in overcoming adversity and finding meaning in even the most difficult circumstances.
