A contestant who wowed judges on a recent episode of “American Idol” is no stranger to singing on television. Years ago, she was also a contestant on Simon Cowell’s “The X Factor.”
On Sunday night’s episode of American Idol, singer Drew Ryn performed an original song titled “Walk on Water” for judges Lionel Richie, Carrie Underwood and Luke Bryan.
If Ryn look familiar, you might have seen her on another competition TV show years ago.
Ryn, full name Drew Ryniewicz, saw success as a contestant on the first season of “The X Factor” as a 14-year-old in 2011. The singer made it to the final round of the reality music competition and placed sixth.
Fourteen years later, Ryn is back on stage singing for another shot at stardom. The 27-year-old Arizona native’s performance on “American Idol” pleased the judges, drawing praise from all three of them.
Bryan called the performance one of his favorites of the day, claiming that Ryn had the “best whisper-singing” he’d ever heard.
Underwood praised Ryn’s choice to sing an original song.
“It is a gamble when somebody walks in with their own song,” Underwood said. “I feel like it was a gamble that paid off.”
Ryn told Underwood that the first concert she had ever attended was one of Underwood’s shows. The contestant even brought an old journal entry and a piece of confetti from Underwood’s concert that she said inspired her singing and songwriting.
“When we drove home my mom told me, ‘see, that could be you up there,’” Ryn told judges.
Richie called the song incredible and said he loved her delivery.
“I’m not trying to get you too excited,” Richie said. “But you should be getting a little excited about right now.”
All three judges voted for Ryn to receive a golden ticket to Hollywood where she will compete for a $250,000 cash prize and a recording contract.
